As a parent, I am deeply disheartened by my experience with Austin Prep. While the school speaks frequently about values and virtues, I have seen little evidence that these ideals are lived out in meaningful ways especially when it comes to supporting students who are struggling, either academically or socially.
Bullying is a major issue, and the school does not seem equipped or willing to address it effectively. There is little to no support for students who need emotional or behavioral guidance. Parents are often left in the dark, unless, of course, they are being asked to donate. The tuition continues to rise, yet the return on investment in terms of education, community, or student well-being — is questionable at best.
It’s also disconcerting how much power is concentrated in the hands of families whose children are teachers’ kids or part of the “in crowd.†Favoritism is alive and well, and it trickles down into academics, social life, and especially athletics. Sports teams do not appear to be chosen or supported based on ability, and not all teams are treated with the same level of respect or funding.
Perhaps most frustrating of all is how little involvement parents are actually allowed to have aside from writing a check. True partnership with families is sorely lacking.
If I could move my child to another school tomorrow, I would. I hope leadership at Austin Prep takes a hard look at what it preaches and begins to close the gap between its mission and its reality.
